OpenHands

All Hands AI's MIT-licensed coding agent, formerly OpenDevin, writes and runs code in a sandbox and opens pull requests using the model you connect. It runs locally, on your servers, in OpenHands Cloud, or as self-hosted OpenHands Enterprise.

The 30-Second Take

Pick OpenHands if you must decide which model the agent calls and where it runs.

All Hands AI's MIT-licensed agent writes and runs code in a sandbox and opens pull requests on whichever model you connect. OpenHands Cloud and the self-hosted Enterprise edition add team features.

Best fit
Teams that need an inspectable agent on their own infrastructure and their own model keys.
Main constraint
Results and cost both track the model you connect, which bills apart from OpenHands.
First move
Pilot on one repository in a Docker sandbox, with a strong model and a per-conversation budget.

Why

Watch the setup: getting it to run and getting tasks to finish are the most common complaints from engineers who used it. Your team configures sandboxes and secrets and pays model providers directly, outside any OpenHands plan.

Buying and deployment

What engineering leaders should verify before a broader rollout.

How you buy it

Free, MIT

Agent Canvas, the CLI, and the SDK are free. Teams is US$500 a month for up to 10 users.

Details

Agent Canvas, the CLI, and the SDK are free under MIT. Teams is self-hosted at US$500 a month for up to 10 users, plus US$50 a month per extra seat, with SAML SSO, RBAC, and a 30-day trial, capped at 5,000 sessions a month. Enterprise has custom pricing and unlimited seats. The pricing page lists no OpenHands Cloud plan.

Cost drivers

No markup

Model usage at vendor rates is the cost. Cloud caps spend per conversation and per month.

Details

Model usage is the main cost, through your own provider key or the OpenHands provider at vendor rates with no markup. Claude Sonnet 4.5 costs US$3 per million input tokens and US$15 per million output tokens. Cloud caps spend with a maximum budget per conversation and a monthly organization budget.

Where it runs

Local or your VPC

A Docker sandbox, your own VM or Kubernetes, or OpenHands Cloud's managed sandboxes.

Details

Locally in a Docker sandbox or as an unisolated process, or on your own VM, Docker, or Kubernetes backend. Hosted in OpenHands Cloud's managed sandboxes, or as self-hosted OpenHands Enterprise on Kubernetes.

What to verify

Write access

The Cloud GitHub app asks to write Actions, contents, and workflows. Isolation varies by backend.

Details

Agent Canvas, the SDK, and the CLI are MIT-licensed, and Enterprise is commercial. Isolation depends on the sandbox each backend uses. The Cloud GitHub app requests write access to Actions, contents, and workflows.

  1. Plan

    1. Work planning: Supports

Work planning, supports. The Jira integration reads a labeled ticket, writes a plan, and implements it, and automation templates triage new Linear issues and Jira incidents. The ticket system stays the planning record.

  2. Build

    1. Codebase context: Supports

Codebase context, supports. Repository skills and AGENTS.md load project context into every conversation. Enterprise adds a Large Codebase SDK, while code search across the organization stays with a dedicated tool.

    2. Coding: Core

Coding, core. This is OpenHands' primary role. The agent plans, edits, and runs code for a task on the model you configure, then opens a pull request for human review.

    3. Agent runtime: Core

Agent runtime, core. Agent Canvas and the CLI connect to an Agent Server, as do IDE integrations over the Agent Client Protocol. The server runs in Docker, process, Kubernetes, or managed Cloud sandboxes. Canvas also controls Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI.

    4. Tool execution: Core

Tool execution, core. OpenHands runs commands and edits files inside its sandbox, with browser and MCP access. Work starts through GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Slack, Jira, the Cloud API, or scheduled and event-driven automations.

  3. Validate

    1. Debugging: Supports

Debugging, supports. The incident triage use case pulls Datadog errors and logs into a root-cause report and a proposed fix, while alerting and on-call stay in the monitoring stack.

    2. Testing: Supports

Testing, supports. OpenHands writes and runs tests. Stop hooks block completion until repository checks pass, and the QA workflow exercises the changed software as a user. Your team owns the test suite and CI.

    3. Code review: Supports

Code review, supports. A pull request review workflow and automation post review comments on a label or reviewer request, and merge approval stays with the engineering team.

    4. Application security: Supports

Application security, supports. The vulnerability remediation use case takes scanner findings, updates the affected dependencies or code, and opens fix pull requests. OpenHands is not the security system of record.

  4. Ship

    1. Source control: Touches

Source control, touches. OpenHands pushes branches and opens pull requests on GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket. Enterprise adds Azure Repos and Bitbucket Data Center. The hosts remain the source-control system.

    2. CI/CD: Touches

CI/CD, touches. The agent runs inside GitHub Actions workflows and can open pull requests that fix failed checks, while build and deployment pipelines stay in your CI/CD platform.

  5. Operate

    1. Observability: Touches

Observability, touches. Datadog errors can start an investigation and Enterprise analytics trace agent runs, but OpenHands does not monitor or alert on production services.

What are engineering leaders learning from deploying OpenHands?

Comparisons

How does OpenHands compare with the alternatives?

  1. OpenHands vs Devin

    • AI Coding Agents

Pick OpenHands when your team should operate the agent and hold the model contracts: it is MIT-licensed, runs on any model you connect, and can run entirely on your infrastructure. Pick Devin when Cognition should run it, with the agent loop in Cognition's cloud.

  2. OpenHands vs Codex

    • AI Coding Agents

Pick Codex for OpenAI models inside ChatGPT plans with an OS-level sandbox, and OpenHands for any model in a Docker or managed sandbox. On GPT-5.5, All Hands AI's harness scores them within 0.2 points on SWE-bench Verified. Each offers a local agent and a hosted service that turns tasks into pull requests.
