The call

Cap the agent at two or three CLI review rounds.

Then run one pull request review on the settled diff with incremental review off, and keep a person as the approver.

Have the coding agent run CodeRabbit on its own changes before it opens a pull request, so the person reviewing it starts from a diff with the obvious findings fixed. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini can all call the CodeRabbit CLI.

When you need this

  • Agents open pull requests faster than reviewers read them.
  • The same CodeRabbit findings come back on agent-written pull requests round after round.
  • Agent loops run into review rate limits.

Worked example: an agent loop that used up the allowance

  1. Setup

Nathan Payne ran CodeRabbit on every push while a coding agent iterated on pull requests, on a plan with 5 PR reviews per developer per hour.

  2. What broke

Repeated agent edits spent the hourly allowance, so reviews stalled until the rolling window refilled.

  3. What he changed

He moved CodeRabbit to settled changes. The agent finishes its own rounds, then one pull request review runs.

  4. The rule to copy

Cap CLI rounds in the agent's instructions, turn off incremental review, and budget US$0.25 per reviewed file past the allowance. Keep the human gate with Kubernetes SIG Architecture's rule that a bot never blocks review.

Evaluation criteria

  1. Connect the agent

How does the agent call CodeRabbit?

Look forClaude Code has a CodeRabbit plugin that starts a review with a command. Other agents call the CLI. The coderabbit skills command installs agent skills that respond to a request such as "Run a CodeRabbit review."

  2. Use structured output

Can the agent read the findings reliably?

Look forThe CLI's agent mode returns structured output with documented exit codes, so a script or agent can tell a finished review from an incomplete one.

  3. Bound the loop

How many review rounds does an agent get?

Look forCap review rounds in the agent's instructions, and send findings that keep coming back to a person. Each CLI review spends the developer's hourly allowance, from 5 on Essentials to 12 on Enterprise. Past it, usage-based reviews bill per reviewed file.

  4. Review the settled diff

When should the pull request review run?

Look forRun the pull request review after the agent finishes its rounds, with incremental review off.

  5. Share one set of rules

Do the agent and the reviewer read the same standards?

Look forList guideline files in knowledge_base.code_guidelines. The IDE extension also picks up CLAUDE.md and .cursorrules. Kubernetes maintainers say good reviews need written conventions and an AGENTS.md file. Write those rules precisely, because FerroEHR found CodeRabbit flagging prose about a rule as a violation of it.

  6. Keep the human gate

    Who approves agent-written changes?

Look forRequire a person to approve agent-written changes. DeployHQ pairs CodeRabbit with Claude Code and Codex, and its engineers judge each finding. Kubernetes SIG Architecture ruled that a review bot must never block review or become essential to it.

Questions to ask vendors

  1. Which agents open pull requests in our repositories, and under which identities?
  2. How many CodeRabbit rounds does an agent run before it stops and asks for a person?
  3. Does the pull request review run on every push, or once the agent is done?
  4. Where do our review rules live, and do the agent and CodeRabbit read the same file?

Red flags

  • Agent loops with no cap on review rounds.
  • Agents pushing after every small fix while incremental review is on.
  • Review rules kept only in CodeRabbit's web settings, where agents cannot read them.
  • Agent-written pull requests merged on a clean CodeRabbit review with no human approval.
