GILD verdict

Choose Junie if your teams standardize on JetBrains IDEs and want an agent that drives the IDE's own tools, with JetBrains Central governing access and credits.

Choose Copilot if GitHub is your system of record and engineers use a mix of editors, JetBrains IDEs included. Many JetBrains shops will hold both, so pilot on the same repositories and compare accepted, reviewed changes and total spend at the plans you would buy.

Junie wins where JetBrains Central governs licenses and credits, and Copilot wins where GitHub pools and budgets AI Credits. Both run inside JetBrains IDEs, and JetBrains AI Chat lists Copilot as one of its agents next to Junie. Junie CLI can also run on a Copilot subscription through the Copilot CLI sign-in.

Choosing between Junie and GitHub Copilot

Choose Junie if

  • Your engineers work in JetBrains IDEs and you want the agent to use the IDE's index, inspections, test runners, and debugger.
  • You want models from several providers, your own provider keys, or a free local tier under one agent.
  • You already manage JetBrains licenses centrally and want AI access, credit limits, and agent policies in JetBrains Central.

Choose GitHub Copilot if

  • Your code and reviews live on GitHub and you want issues assigned to a cloud agent that returns draft pull requests.
  • Engineers use a mix of editors, from VS Code and Visual Studio to JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Xcode.
  • You want completions and pooled AI credits with budgets set at the user, organization, and enterprise level in GitHub.
