CodeRabbit vs GitHub Copilot Code Review: Dedicated Reviewer or Bundled Feature?

GitHub.com teams start with the review already in their Copilot seats. CodeRabbit pays for a seat of its own once code spans other Git platforms.

GILD verdict

Use Copilot code review when every repository is on GitHub.com, because Business and Enterprise seats include it and bill each review in AI credits from the seat's pool.

Choose CodeRabbit when repositories also sit on GitLab, Bitbucket or GitHub Enterprise Server, or when review should learn from reviewer replies. Copilot reaches Azure DevOps only in public preview. If both run, name the required reviewer for each repository. A CodeRabbit Essentials seat billed annually costs US$24 a month, against US$19 for a Copilot Business seat that also carries completion and agents.

Pick by Git platform and seat price, because accuracy is close. The New Stack's October 6, 2026 read of Martian's independent benchmark ranked CodeRabbit third and Copilot fourth. Copilot code review also runs in IDEs. CodeRabbit is a separate per-developer product that reviews on every major Git platform.

Choosing between CodeRabbit and GitHub Copilot

Choose CodeRabbit if

  • Repositories live on GitLab, Bitbucket, or GitHub Enterprise Server, where Copilot is not available, or on Azure DevOps, where its code review is in public preview.
  • You want review rules refined by Learnings from reviewer replies, beside path-level rules in one configuration file.
  • You want review cost as a per-developer seat with a fixed hourly allowance.

Choose GitHub Copilot if

  • Every repository is on GitHub.com, and each review can draw from the AI credit pool that comes with Business and Enterprise seats.
  • You want pull requests from members without a Copilot license reviewed too, billed to the organization in AI credits.
  • You want suggested fixes handed to Copilot cloud agent, which opens a pull request against your branch.

Use a task pilot to measure accepted work and review time.

Footprint on the Agentic Software Development stack

They differ on three of 12 layers. GitHub Copilot owns two that CodeRabbit does not. Coverage is each product's placement on this stack, as its product page shows it. Core is a job the product owns; Supports and Touches are jobs it helps with. Coverage says nothing about how well a product does them.
