GILD verdict

Choose Claude Code if you want an agent that finds the files and runs the tests itself.

It brings the tool and its models from one vendor. Choose Aider if engineers want to pick the model per task and steer each edit at no seat cost. Claude Code also brings SSO and admin controls; Aider asks you to accept an open-source project whose releases have slowed. Pilot both on the same Claude model so the gap you measure comes from the tool.

Claude Code wins when the agent works unattended. In AIMultiple's June 2026 one-shot test on Claude Sonnet 4.6, it passed 60% of backend checks on a helpdesk build, and Aider passed 13.3%. Aider wins on cost control, with no seat fee and every token spent on a model you pick.

Choosing between Aider and Claude Code

Choose Aider if

  • Engineers want to choose the model per task: OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, a local model, or a GitHub Copilot token.
  • Each edit should land as its own git commit, and the developer decides which files the model may change.
  • You want no seat cost and source code open under Apache 2.0.

Choose Claude Code if

  • You want an agent that finds the files and runs tests and commands until the change works, inside permission modes and sandboxing.
  • One vendor should supply the tool and the models, from Pro at US$20 a month to Team and Enterprise seats with SSO and admin controls.
  • Engineers work across the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app, and the web.

What practitioners report, side by side

Each product's figures come from its own practitioners, for the group you pick.

Overall signal

All practitioners rate Claude Code +45, 17 points above Aider at +28. Most of the gap is in complaints, with 12 of Aider's 59 sources negative against 13 of Claude Code's 110.

The score counts the authors from all practitioners that take a side, one vote each with their latest view, and is how far positive votes lead negative ones, per 100 votes, so Aider's +28 rests on votes split 28 positive, 17 mixed and 12 negative and Claude Code's +45 on 60, 32 and 13.

A lead of a fifth of the votes reads positive and a lead of half strong positive, with the same lines below zero. The dots show each source, positive, mixed, negative. Use a task pilot to measure accepted work and review time.

Footprint on the Agentic Software Development stack

They differ on three of 12 layers. Claude Code owns one that Aider does not. Coverage is each product's placement on this stack, as its product page shows it. Core is a job the product owns; Supports and Touches are jobs it helps with. Coverage says nothing about how well a product does them.

Each count is the sources that praise a theme, or raise it as a concern, out of those that discuss it. A row pairs the two products when both carry a theme under the same or an equivalent name.

A count ending in "so far" has under 5 sources from 3 authors among all practitioners. "Not a theme in its sources" means GILD found no theme of that name in that product's sources.

What practitioners raise as concerns

Among all practitioners, Claude Code alone has seven concern themes that reach 5 sources from 3 authors. Requires Strong Review and Usage / Cost lead, at 26 of 40 and 19 of 31. Both carry Reliability. It is raised in all 6 Aider sources that discuss it, against 9 of 10 for Claude Code. Aider alone has four concern themes that reach 5 sources from 3 authors. Slower Release Pace and Results Depend on the Model lead, at 10 of 11 and 7 of 9.
